Reception for "Homeroom" at Subtext Gallery was perfect! The rain stayed away, crowds of art lovers viewed amazing works, drinks were had, people were fed, coloring ensued and the band played loudly. Thank you to everyone for making this event so much fun!

We raised over $6000 with the Ema Art for Japan Fundraiser... WOWOWOW! THANKS to each and every one of you that participated, checked out the auctions and supported the cause. It was a bit of a nightmare working with Mission Fish (and I flat out can say, "DON'T USE THEM.") since they are greedy little buggers. But overall it was a huge labor of love and I'm proud to have been able to help Japan in some tiny way.

In Los Angeles, for the "Year of the Labbit" at the Japanese American National Museum, I have a custom Labbit on view from July 14 through September 11, 2011. My "Pooka" is showcased with mighty talent all around, including work by Edwin Ushiro, Yoskay Yamamoto, Camilla d'Errico, Lou Pimentel and Harmony Gong amongst others. All pieces are for sale, support the museum and the artists.

The show is titled, "Release the Kraken" and has local talent repainting collected works of art depicting water with a "Kraken" added to the scenes. My love for Joel Nakamura's work started before I ever began collecting art or curating. In college, many many moons ago, I came across his work in a random magazine and instantly was enthralled. So many details, such interesting characters and exquisite colors! I cut the image out of the magazine and pasted it inside a book I was putting together for an Art Education Class book titled "What is Art?". I was questioning if illustration was to be considered "Art" and of course, I knew it to be true, but you had to make the book full of opposing images and leave the answers up the viewer. Joel's work was a large painting on the side of a semi-truck advertising Corona Beer, it was a complex image with many hidden characters and objects. The first time a beer company actually caught my attention with a campaign. Yes, advertising can contain "art".

The next time I thought of Joel was about 6 years later while taking an Illustration Art class. We had to write about our favorite illustrators. Something I hadn't thought too much about, but I had already started collecting children's books so it wasn't a hard topic to write about. Narrowing down to 4 artists only, I thought of the impact Joel's work had on me so many years before and chose him as one the illustrators to focus on. I found his website, copied his bio photo where he was wearing an odd hat with "horns", and then learned more about his background and techniques. He is influenced by Mexican art and paints and hammers on metal, creating time-consuming and thought provoking images often around mythical stories. It was great to learn about a technique not commonly used in current art. I admired his work even more than before. The class assignment was actually useful!

Around the same time of the paper, I started an apprenticeship with an established designer who collected art and worked with many of his artists friends. The first day on the job (his home), there across the living room I spied something very familiar. It's was an original Joel Nakamura. Wow. Strange coincidence, small world. And the designer was personal friends with Joel. Soon after I found myself on the phone talking with Joel and he was giving me advice on being an illustrator (I was under some strange illusion I could be one). I was thrilled to be getting advice from such a talented man, and he had an amazing peacefulness about it that made me immediately feel comfortable and like an old friend. Later that same year, Joel came out with a children's book and was signing them in Pasadena (Joel lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico). I of course made sure to be there and he signed and doodled inside my copy, I was thrilled and it was nice to finally meet him in-person.

Years later, I was curating my first big art show and I knew I had to include Joel. He agreed with much gumption and completed three beautiful pieces that all sold almost immediately. The next year I ran into him at San Diego Comic Con, he was watching the booth of the designer I use to work with. I invited him to be in another show I was curating, this time we had a long talk over the phone discussing the true nature of people, it was a good conversation and I left feeling like I had a true friend in Joel Nakamura. He's the real deal, down to earth and modest with an explosion of creativity emenating from his fingertips. Keep up the great work, Joel.

Ema are traditional small Japanese wooden tablets left at shrines with an image on one side, and a wish or a prayer on the other. To help Japan relief efforts, spread awareness, support and hope, artists are creating ema with their own positive heartfelt imagery for auction to benefit Artists Help Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund at Give2Asia.

Taking inspiration from these simple, traditional and specifically Japanese gestures of wish-making/prayers this auction allows everyone of any culture, religious background and dynamics a similar talisman, using the "if you will it, it will be" thought belief. A small work of art for a big cause.

One side has been left blank for its new owner to write his or her own wishes or prayers.

Bidding begins Sunday, April 3, at eBay Giving Works for Give2Asia. Bidding for each ema is open for seven days. More ema artwork will be added through April 20.

I'm on the prowl for extrapolating the importance of design over generic presence in the market place. That winning people over with their hearts is more enduring, exhilarating and fulfilling than stuffing the shelves with another unnecessary product, and cramming our pockets with cold hard cash for more nights out on the town, bigger fancier cars and homes so large you can hear an echo. Yes, I understand the need to have a roof over my head, food on my plate and insurance for any future emergencies. But I also know that I live a life filled with less money and more happiness than many of my peers. I love what I do for a living. It's not always glamorous and probably not as super awesome as my friends think it might be, but it IS pretty damn great. Getting paid to research until my brain leaks ideas and then somehow manage to communicate just an ounce of what I've synthesized in my head is a luxury. But in the end, more often than not, I face challenges of convincing others to trust in my visions... the irony being that my previous creations are what brought the client finding me in the first place is not lost.

Upon researching supportive texts to help clarify and positively persuade my thesis I found several that made a smart and sensible stance for good design aka Right Brain thinking:

A huge contributor to creative thinking, sharing, loving, caring and making a difference is Cuban artist Elsa Mora. Her stories are goose-bump inducing, tear-jerking, inspiring, incredible, amazing and beautiful. She maintains several blogs and an Etsy store, besides taking care of her endearing family, the ups and downs in life and creating highly personal art. She really is a remarkable human being and I want to thank her for helping me push myself further despite obstacles I stumble across in my life. "Thank you, Elsita!"

When it comes to painting skills, Mark Ryden has them beyond the average human. I've been a long time admirer of this talented artist's abilities and unique perspectives on visual story-telling. He's been copied many many times so if you feel you've seen this subject matter and style before... it's true. I guess copying is the sincerest form of flattery. I only wish less people would accept it as being okay.

Mark had an opening in NYC this weekend that several artist friends were able to attend in-person. I'm rather envious, but hoping when I travel there in 2 weeks I can view the work for myself. yay! NYC, stop flaunting all your wares... I'm ready for you already!

And it was so much fun running into this lovely lady on Saturday night. I was invited to a little get-together at Lola's and met some wonderful, fun and creative people.

The only downfalls were

1) I missed the GB opening at JANM, which was incredible from what I hear and

2) It took me 2 hours to drive back to where I was staying due to highway 101 and 110 being closed... the only major arteries going to where I needed to be. I don't know LA and finding my way through side streets which were also blocked often was a little frustrating, especially at 3 am :(

BUT I made it back and now I'm in SD again, trying to catch up and also get some great ideas onto paper and into people's hands for my next curating adventure! YAY! LA!

Three Apples LA Prognosis

I obviously don't know how to use Photo Booth for recording video (taken at Eliza's studio with art cat Zara). In the clip above I'm trying to tell you how great the night before was at the VIP opening for the Three Apples/ Hello Kitty show at Royal/T in Culver City. They made everyone... EVERYONE wait in line to get in since the fire marshall called in his troops. Artists and Sanrio employees were waiting too. Finally we managed to bypass the line and get our Hello Kitty lovin' selves inside (minus Eliza who had to leave and not counting Jeni since she despises HK, but she was there for moral support). After snacking on delicious treats and free Sapporo... much awesome art was enjoyed and dancing ensued. Fun FUN night, even for HK hater Jeni, lol.

Geeky/crafty me painted my own Hello Kitty Space Kat tie just for the event... and had many fans appreciating my labor of love. Dork. The pic on the right is inside the Hello Kitty Airstream, schwanky!

I'm spending the rest of the weekend up here in LA and recorded the video with Zara at Eliza's studio where I'm super jealous of her set-up. Almost... ALMOST makes me want to be up here too with a studio space. Keeping busy all weekend, wishing everyone out there the best weekend ever and reminding you that Halloween is coming up soon... get out there this weekend and get your costume perfected... cause it's no fun combing 7-11 on All Hallow's Eve for disguises.

While catching up on friends' Flickr photos I came across Mike Burnett's new design, "Average Joe Schmoe", wooden DIY figures that are being produced by Bigshot Toyworks. Looks like a traveling custom show is coming up in November starting at Shoparooni Annex Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio.

The piece shown on the postcard for the show specifically caught my attention, it's by Jacksonville, Florida artist Sean Mahan. Sean's site doesn't reveal too much about him, but I did manage to learn that he had a show back in September at Brooklyn Collective in New York and that there is an interview with him in Give Me Back magazine, I'll keep a lookout.

His work is so peaceful and elegant. He works on luan wood with graphite and washes of acrylic. Young people seem to be his favorite subject matter and I love the simple colors and stylized lines of his juxtaposed flat and 3-dimenensional work. I am always a sucker for exposed wood and he does a fine job of letting nature shine through his work.

I am particularly smitten with the painting "Sewing" (shown above). The sudden use of bright dramatic patterns is wonderful! I hope to see more work by this Savannah College of Art & Design graduate and maybe one day have an opportunity to work with him. :)

Also interesting to note, Sean is a musician and heads his own band(s), "Verde/Kids on Bikes" and multiple other music ventures. Rock on Sean! Rock on. (cheesy I know, but I couldn't resist.)

It is a bittersweet thing to write that the Kokeshi show at the Japanese American National Museum has come to an end. It's been an amazing experience having the opportunity to work and show at such a respectable space. I know it was a first for many artists to have their work in a museum and for a few... the first time to show their work to the public, anywhere. Gives me goosebumps thinking about the opportunities that have happened and are in the works and in the future for so many amazing creatives. I'm keeping my toes, fingers and cats' mitts crossed for more adventures in the future where I can continue to work with such incredible talent. To the new friends I made, I am truly honored to have had the privilege to meet you (online or in-person) and to now know you on a first name basis, lucky lucky me!

Meeting so many artists this year has been intoxicating and as a result I was inspired to collect my own "Yearbook" of autographs from a few I spent some time with in-person. Below is a necklace book that I found at Renegade Craft Fair in LA, the day after the Kokeshi show opened, July 11. The maker of this beloved treasure is Found and Made Designs.

Despite the mispronunciation at the beginning and the embellishing a bit on the story behind the custom Kokeshi section, it's a pretty sweet piece. The characters in the U2 music video/animation I posted earlier remind me of Kelly Tunstall's wide-eyed girls. I know the big-doe-eyed-girl thing is played over and over again, but there's something truly special about Kelly's girls. I love the way she portrays her characters... so fashionable and so much fun attention is paid to other elements of her paintings, I can't help but have a crush on many. I am lucky enough to have a new painting (in-process image above) from Kelly working its way from San Fran to my tiny home art collection... super yays!!

Kelly and her husband, the talented artist Ferris Plock, have a show, "Sea of Love", opening soon at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco (Aug. 6 - 29th). I HIGHLY recommend dropping by and being passionately inspired by their lovely, fun and collaborative work.

Good Question: RSS Feeds and Readers

I use Shrook to stay up-to-date on all the blogs/websites I follow. A friend of mine uses Google Reader. There are several other free RSS readers online, but I am not familiar with using them. If you don't know what an RSS feed is, take a look at my very first post and there's a link explaining what it is and how to save your favorite sites.

Above is a screenshot of Shrook in action on my computer. The second column on the left is the name of the website bookmarked, the yellow numbers show how many new posts have been added since I last looked at the site. The middle column shows a written preview of what has been posted, with yellow stars indicating posts I have not clicked on yet. Posts can go away or stay depending on the preferences you set up. You can also mark posts that you want to go back to. The last row shows the written text of a post and any photos (not all sites are set-up to display images in the reader, but the majority do... I definitely pay more attention to the sites that show a picture in my reader). Shrook is very easy to use and the software has regular updates, it doesn't crash like it use to and I love all the options to customize it the way I prefer looking at posts.

Go now and fill your RSS Reader with many time sucking and creative juice flowing sites!

As of this post I have 338 bookmarked RSS feeds, or in layman terms, a whole lotta sites I try to stay up to date with. I use these sites to distract me from my day, learn how to find cheap deals, see what the latest pattern trend is, see adorably cute animals and read up on friends' activities, etc. etc. Included in this vast pool of sites I look at regularly is Cool Hunting. I was excited to learn at the Kokeshi preview, a writer from the site wanted to post the event and even ask a few questions to yours truly. Here's the damage ;)

I first came across Yellena James' work through a design blog, wish I could name the one but starting several years ago I have been following so many that they all get mixed around in my head, but needless to say it was a really good one! Yellena calls Portland, Oregon home... I've come discover this area is a treasure trove of great talent.

Yellena has work on Etsy, mostly prints with a rare original drawing posted. Her colorful organic shapes make me think of dreamland flowers and meadows.

I was unable to find blank kokeshi online back in 2007 when I started the first Custom Kokeshi show, so I had to have all the dolls created for me. All are U.S. made from Hardwood Maple and Birch (sorry, not the traditional Japanese woods) with removable head. Minor sanding may be required to finish cut edges.

The LARGE is the same design the artists used for the Fall 2007 show at Subtext. The ARTIST size is the same design used in the most recent show at the Japanese American National Museum. I have a limited quantity of every style, write me if you would like to purchase any, this is the "official shop" for now :)

3 Kokeshi Artists Interviews

The amazing and lovely Stella Im Hultberg has been interviewed numerous times in the past and one of the most recent ones is from Sour Harvest for her show "Momento Mori", which opened last Friday night (July 10, 2009) at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles.

Stella also writes on her personal blog the influence the Kokeshi project had on her latest work:

"i've been painting a wooden figure for the kokeshi show (in july), and for fear of ruining the one & only kokeshi blank i received, i ended up making an army of studies with little wooden forms i'd had... this lead me to other ideas of painting some mini paintings on wood i'd cut up of black figures: black shapes are so interesting & fascinating to me. especially when it's a living figure (i love black cats). unexpected, interesting shapes with mysterious implication & abstraction... i plan on painting some more as i've cut up quite a few pieces of wood, i'm enjoying the process of simplicity of the graphic imagery and the immediacy of acrylic paint (which i'm really bad with). hopefully this will land me somewhere interesting with my larger works as well. ^__^"

Poketo also did a little interview with me, shortly before the show opened, you can find my wordy answers here and also a peak into the artwork I create outside of paid design projects. Some people were surprised to learn that the curator of the custom section, i.e. me, has a piece in the show. The Custom Kokeshi show back in 2007 (at Subtext Gallery in San Diego) was sprouted from an invitation by another artist to create multiple custom Munnys for a duo show, but I wanted to explore a new shape and invite a wider array of artists too... so Custom Kokeshi was born :)

"Cc73" my first and only custom Munny was created for The Summer of Munny show in Denver, Colorado in 2006. Acrylic on vinyl.

"Mix & Match, Collect & Play" by Christina Conway. Acrylic on wood, 8" tall. 3 kokeshi that are interchangeable.

A creaky video I took of the space before it was ready for the public. I wanted to record the dolls before the protective shells were placed on the display boxes. Enjoy. But you MUST see this in-person, the scope of the show is truly impressive, showing the history of kokeshi. Hope you can visit the museum. Show will be up until Oct. 4.

All the kokeshi in the custom section of the show are available for sale here. There is little signage that pieces can be purchased so take advantage of this and find a favorite online, there's not a bad piece in the bunch :)

I will post more about the opening soon, trying to catch up on everything missed in the last few days since I spent them away in Los Angeles... which was awesome!
